Undocu5k Keynote Speaker
We are happy to announce this year's UNDOCU5K keynote speaker will be
Griselda Madrigal Lara
Griselda Madrigal Lara was born in a small town in Michoacan, Mexico. She was raised there for her first eight years until she migrated to the California with her family. Despite her undocumented status, Griselda managed to be the first in her family to graduate from college. After graduating high school she began her schooling at SRJC where she graduated with high honors in an Associate's of Arts degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. She then transferred to SSU for her Bachelor’s degree in Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies. In her two years at SSU she co-founded the Undocu-Scholars Coalition and participated in the organization of the first conference for undocumented students at SSU. She was part of the McNair Scholars Program which led her to investigate and write about the experiences of undocumented students at Predominantly White Institutions. Through her scholarly research, she advocated for a resource center for undocumented students at SSU.
After graduating from SSU, Griselda moved to Austin, Texas for a Master's degree in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at the University of Texas- Austin. It was in graduate school where she began running, completing multiple races including her first marathon. In her last year of graduate school she trained for and ran her first marathon while writing her thesis- focusing on undocumented Latinx/as in academia. Running has helped Griselda work through difficult emotions, and experiences encountered as a woman of color in today’s society. Griselda currently works for Mendocino College as the High School Equivalency Outreach Specialist, she is a writer for La Voz Bilingual Newspaper, and project manager for California Community Advocates- a non-profit organization.
